Traveling with Your Pet: What to Know Before You Go

Whether you’re planning a family vacation, a road trip, or a move across state lines, traveling with your pet requires preparation to keep them safe, healthy, and comfortable. From managing travel anxiety to meeting health requirements, a few simple steps can make the journey smoother for both you and your furry companion.

Help Your Pet Stay Calm on the Road or in the Air

Just like people, pets can experience stress and anxiety during travel. If your pet tends to become anxious in the car or when visiting new places, talk to your veterinarian about safe medications for travel-related anxiety or stress. There are gentle prescription options available that can help your pet stay relaxed and comfortable throughout the trip.

Keep Vaccinations and Preventatives Current

Before traveling, make sure your pet’s vaccinations and parasite preventatives are up to date. This includes protection against fleas, ticks, and heartworm, which can be more prevalent in different regions. Keeping vaccines current not only protects your pet but may also be required for boarding, lodging, or crossing state lines.

Double-Check Microchip Information

If your pet is microchipped, take a moment to verify that your contact information is current with the microchip registry. Traveling increases the risk of pets getting lost in unfamiliar areas, and an up-to-date microchip is the best way to ensure a safe reunion if they become separated from you.

Flying with Your Pet

If you’re traveling by plane, check with your airline well in advance for any pet-related requirements. Many airlines require specific forms, health certificates, or vaccination records. Policies can vary between carriers, so confirm exactly what’s needed to avoid any last-minute surprises at the airport.

Health Certificates for Travel

Our clinic offers interstate travel certificates (health certificates) for pets traveling within the United States. These certificates confirm that your pet is healthy and up to date on required vaccines before traveling.
Please note that we do not issue international travel certificates or certificates for pets traveling to Hawaii, as these destinations have additional, complex requirements.
